Adopting Government Middle School, Chahar Majra

Sahyog Sanstha has adopted Government Middle School in Chahar Majra, a small village near Mullanpur Garibdass in Punjab, just 9 kilometres from Chandigarh. This project is personal. We live right here in this community. We drive past this school. We see these children every day. When we decided to take action, we wanted to start close to home, helping the people nearest to us. That matters to us deeply.

The school's enrollment is made up largely of children from working-class families. Many of their parents are construction labourers building the high-rise towers and luxury developments in the nearby Omaxe New Chandigarh township. These families pour their sweat into building dream homes for others while their own children learn in classrooms that need paint, desks that need replacing and facilities that need repair.

What makes this school remarkable is the heart of its students. The track and field team has competed in local competitions and performed well above expectations, winning events despite training without proper shoes, running on uneven ground and sharing worn-out equipment between them. These kids show up and give everything they have with almost nothing behind them. They deserve better.

Over the next four to five months, our team will be on the ground working alongside the school and community to change that. We are repairing and upgrading classrooms, installing a proper water cooling system so students have access to clean drinking water through the brutal Punjab summers, bringing in real sports equipment so the athletes who have already proven themselves can train the way they should, cleaning up the school grounds and surrounding areas, and carrying out general maintenance across the entire building.

Education is the one thing that can break the cycle. When these children walk into a school that is cared for, supplied and maintained, they see a future worth reaching for. Our goal is simple. Give them the tools, the environment and the support to get there."

2023 - 2024

14 Gold medals in Athletics. First place in Kabaddi. Girls took Gold in Karate. Three athletes made it to State

2024 - 2025

Kabaddi champions at Zone and District. Three students represented Mohali at State level.

Six medals in Athletics. Four Golds in Karate for girls. Mansi, Class 8, selected for the District Mohali team at State Games.

Rebuild: A Place Worth Walking Into
Their parents build luxury towers at Omaxe New Chandigarh for a living. Their children learn in a school with peeling walls, broken desks and a water system that barely works. In 45°C Punjab summers, kids sit through class with no clean drinking water.

We are repainting classrooms, replacing furniture, fixing plumbing and electrical, installing a proper water cooling system, clearing the grounds and bringing the entire building up to a standard these children deserve.

A school that looks cared for tells a child they matter. That's where it starts.

Support the Students: The Stuff That Keeps a Kid in School

Not every child here is an athlete. Most are just trying to stay in class. A torn bag, a missing notebook or a lack of sanitary pads can be enough to push a child out. 38% of girls in rural India miss school every month because of their period.

We provide school kits with bags, notebooks, pens, uniforms and supplies at the start of each year. We distribute sanitary products so girls don't miss a single day. We're setting up a library, volunteer tutoring and parent engagement programmes.

None of this is expensive. For a child in Chahar Majra, it's the difference between staying in school and falling out.

Back the Athletes: 18 Gold Medals. Zero Proper Shoes.

In three years, these students won 18 Gold medals across Kabaddi, Athletics, Karate and Tug of War. Five athletes represented District Mohali at State level. Mansi, Class 8, made the State Games team this year.

They did it on dirt. No coach. No track. No kits. Sharing worn-out shoes between them.

We are levelling both grounds, bringing in a coach, providing full sports kits and shoes, installing floodlights for evening training, building a 200-metre running track, setting up daily nutrition for athletes and constructing a multi-purpose indoor sports room.

These kids already win with nothing. We want to see what happens when someone shows up for them.
